How much of the game is mechanics and how much is setting? I'm more interested in the world than the rules.

It's 80% rules and 20% setting. The book opens with a backstory told in epistolary format. It later presents a number of in-world organizations (Star-Spangled Squadron, Church of Ascension, Dreadnaught, Spetsikhotron, Soaring Sabers) and a number of in-world heroes and villains. There is also a (separate product) Capital City Gazetteer and Map Set that provides an overview of the fictional Capital City.

We will be expanding the setting via graphic novels, with the first graphic novel (96 pages) being crowdfunded this March.

It would be a bad character creation program if it didn't cut down creation time a lot.

Character Creation in most games is the part with the most moving parts and generally happens when people are least familiar with the system. Character builder apps are an ask for most games, and I know I personally hope any game I'm getting has one.

With that said, as someone who has build tens of characters of various stripes in the system while also being close friends with someone who has built hundreds so far during play testing, all by hand, I can assure others who read this discussion that an app is absolutely not necessary, even if it would be useful.

If you buy the PDF and later would like to purchase the hardcover from our site, I have generally sent a coupon code for the purchase of the hardcover to discount the difference. If have never been queried that about POD on DTRPG but if someone requested it then I think I'd do so. I'd just need proof of purchase and it might take me a day or two if I'm beleaguered with other work.

Here is a thread with seven pre-generated character archetypes built for use with Ascendant:

These archetypes can be used as characters for a campaign if you want to jump into play right away. Even though they’re all at Power Level 20, you’ll see they are wildly different in their capacities and style. Follow the link to the forums to download them.

Earth Control, Ice Control, and Water Control all allow you to Run at Power SPs minus weight. Since they are based on the Power Set rules, which would give Running a Base Score of zero, I'm not sure why weight is subtracted from the Running speed. It seems you are being penalized twice, the Base Score is already zero, why subtract your weight on top of that?

Earth Control/Ice Control/Water Control: It is an ongoing joke on the Discord forums that anytime I offer a simplified black box, the first thing everyone wants to do is reverse engineer it to understand why. So to explain what's going on:

When simulating the physics, a character who has X SPs of some Control-kinesis can pick up and move a target of Weight Y SPs at a Speed of X - Y SPs. With 12 SPs of Earth Control, you can pick up 4 SPs of earth and move it at a Speed of 8 SPs. Since you are using the same power to move yourself, that same math ought physically to apply. Your Speed is therefore purposefully set to (Power - Weight). All sorts of strange results occur if you ignore this! (E.g.: Telekinesis-Man becomes able to fly himself carrying Bob faster than he can move Bob using his Telekinesis, even though Telekinesis-Man is using Telekinesis to move himself!)

OK, but what about CP Cost? In terms of CP cost, the base cost of a Movement Power is determined by the character who purchases...See more

All checks are handled by rolling 1d100.

The rule is found on page 51, Core Mechanic #9: Challenge Checks, subsection Challenge Action Resolution Table (CHART):
"The player or GM controlling the character then rolls 1d100 and finds the column matching the number they rolled."

The rule is repeated on p. 259, Actions, Challenge Action Mechanics, subsection Challenge Action Resolution Chart (CHART):
"The player or GM controlling the character then rolls 1d100 and finds the column matching the number they rolled."

That's all there is to it. AV - DV = RV, roll 1d100 cross-reference die roll with RV on CHART.

3) Checking POWERS. Let's say he has Air Supply 18, what should I do with it, how do I check? SKILS – the same story, Aerial Combat 15, how to make a check? The same applies to Perks and Drawbacks, with examples if you showed it would be great.

2) American Eagle wants to lift a spaceship with a Weight of 17. His AV is his MIG 15. His DV is the spaceship's Weight of 17. His RV is AV - DV or 15 - 17 = -2. That's all there is to it.
3) Aerial Combat 15 is normally used as a DV when someone else attempts to attack him. He could also use his Aerial Combat as his AV if he was attempting to ram a target or fly through very hazardous conditions.

( In D&D terms, AV is your bonus to the D20 and DV is the Difficult Class. )

Normally, a Ranged Attack is made using the attacker's AGI vs. the defender's AGI.

If the attacker has the Marksmanship skill, he can substitute his Marksmanship for his AGI as the AV.
If the defender has Combat Sense power, Deflection power, Aerial Combat Skill, or Parkour skill, he can substitute one of those for his AGI as the DV.

If you refer to p. 492, there is a complete list of all of the Attribute Substitutions that shows what they can be used to do.

I just got done with my first read through of the book and a couple things caught my eye. As I haven't gone through to notice things more deeply but one thing really didn't seem to make any sense to me. The default SP for powers being 0. From what I could tell, most if not all powers are fundamentally worthless at 0SP. So unless I missed something important that seems like bad game design to me. Why not just simplify things by raising the base costs of powers and start them at 1SP? The way it seems right now is that someone isn't buying the power at base cost but buying the right to buy the power and that just seems unnecessarily convoluted. If I am missing something please let me know

Hi Chase! Thanks for giving the game a readthrough. The default Base Scores were carefully chosen and a default of 1 SP wouldn't work. Here's a few reasons why:

1) A lot of powers have a Base Score that is not 0. Among those are mainstays such as Blast, Combat Sense, and Strike. Often you will buy a power *just* to get it at whatever the Base Score is. For instance, Strike's Base Score is your MIG. if you have MIG 10, you might buy "Cosmic Strike" just to get the Cosmic Damage Type, so you deal 10 SPs of Cosmic Damage instead of 10 SPs of Bludgeoning Damage. If you have VAL 8 and AGI 8, you might buy "Intuitive Combat Sense" just to get the Intuitive modifier, even though you don't purchase extra SPs of Combat Sense above the base score of 8.

2) A LOT of powers have Modifiers that change the Variable Cost. If you buy Teleport, the Variable Cost changes radically if its Hyperkinetic Teleport versus Slow Self-Only Teleport. So the Variable Cost has to be kept separate...See more

If there are 4 SPs of Hazardousness, they can only move with a Challenge Movement Action." I think you meant to say either reduces safe speed by 3 or if there are 6 SPs of Hazardousness instead, otherwise the safe speed would be 1 instead of 0.

No, the rule as written is correct. The same rule is reflected on page 291: "If the Hazardousness is 4 SPs or more, he cannot paddle and must move as a Challenge Movement Action, making an AGI vs. Hazardousness Challenge Check to determine his speed."

A character without the Swimming power has a maximum Speed of 2 SP. I did not want it to be the case that a character without Swimming power in very choppy water (4 SPs of Hazardousness) could safely travel at 1 SP while a character *WITH* Swimming had no benefit relative to him.

During this excellent actual play video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fejJL5TlnY8&t=4167s, you allowed players to interrupt an enemy action and attack in one instance and move out of the way of an enemy attack in another instance by taking an extra move action, for the cost of 10 HP each. However, I see nothing in the rules to permit this, since emergency power stunts on page 266 only allows you to emulate a concentration or sustained power as a defense to interrupt an attack. Furthermore, emulating the extra attack perk on page 268 does not allow you to interrupt. Is there rules support for what you allowed or were you just using "GM fiat" to allow players to do it at the time.
Customer avatar
Alexander M January 09, 2022 1:24 am UTC
PUBLISHER
Great question!

As noted in the Initiative section, you can reserve an action on your Panel to interrupt an enemy on their Panel. For instance, in the Star-Spangled Squadron campaign, Warp would frequently reserve a Movement Action to blink away if an enemy moved in melee range. Stronghold would hold a key chokepoint and reserve a Challenge Action to attack anyone who moved in range. Etc. The downside to this tactic is that you're not using your Action on your Panel.

In emergency situations, Power Stunts can allow you to interrupt an enemy at a high cost in HP but only with concentration or sustained powers. This is really helpful for defending friends with Projectable Forcefields and so on.

If you want to use your actions on your Panel and *also* somehow interrupt later with an attack or somesuch, there is a trick to do it. You spend 10 HP to power stunt Extra Attack on your Panel, and then reserve the action you just gained from that power stunt to use later with the...See more

It's not based on or compatible with DC Heroes but it was inspired by it. In the Introduction to the game I call out the 1980s DC Heroes (MEGS) and Marvel (FASERIP) RPGs as the game's biggest inspirations. Like DC Heroes, it uses a logarithmic scale where each 1 point of a characteristic represents a doubling of power. Like FASERIP it uses a universal color-coded table for action resolution. It's not a retro-clone of either, though, it's own unique system.

I don't know about transforming someone into something else, but there's a homebrew Reflective Modifier for Forcefield. Whenever the Forcefield blocks damage, "make an automatic Ranged Attack against the source of the damage, with the AV of the attack equal to the SPs of Forcefield. Instead of an EV, the attack deals Damage equal to the Damage blocked, and of the same Damage Type. If the attacker is not in Range and LOS for this automatic attack to occur, then the automatic attack targets the nearest entity in a straight line between the character and the direction that the attack came from, provided the entity is in Range. Increase the Base Cost by 5 for each Damage Type the Forcefield can reflect and record the Power as Reflective Forcefield." I'm quoting this from another guy who helped build/test some of the rules for the game.

"Unless I'm missing something, there doesn't seem to be any way to build a power that lets you transform a foe into something else, like a toad?"

Correct. "Buff" powers are awkward to make work in Ascendant due to the Power Limit rules and the way logarithmic maths works. You could always fluff your Cosmic Control guy as polymorphing enemies he kills, but mechanically it leads to a lot of problems if a player wants to abuse it.

That sounds great for those of us who print the rules out. My preference would be to maybe take out the large art spreads but leave some of the small images like in the equipment section. If you could, please don't turn all the blue and red boxes into medium grey boxes because 1) it's hard to tell them apart and 2) it might still print too dark. Maybe you could change it to just a box surrounding normal black text on a white background. But what am I saying? Alexander M January 07, 2022 10:04 pm UTC

William -- Most of the art in the book was commissioned by backers who funded the Kickstarter for the privilege of dictating the art. That includes virtually all of the racier images. For instance, BFF, Dr. Krankenschwester, Ishtar, Queen of Night, and Renard the Fox were all backer commissions where they choose the character, scene, and artist. Since that was their reward, I don't think it'd be fair to those backers to do a version of the book that had lots of art but excluded *their* art. I do think an art-free version, however, is industry standard and therefore fair and reasonable.

Your points on the colored boxes are well taken. A box with a color border with an interior of black text on a white sounds preferable to everyone I've spoken to.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
